All of a sudden the sound left my e-mail program but still works in the
system??? I am using a new Dell laptop with Vista on it. I used to get the
volume bar at the top when I wanted to increase or decrease volume, but it
too left. If you can help me, please write at (e-mail address removed) or
(e-mail address removed). Thanks so much for anything you can do to help.

Windows Mail has no effect on your disappearing volume bar.
I suggest you get that aspect fixed first by calling Dell tech support.

I did not think the two issues were connected, so I will contact Dell. I am
quite unhappy with them about this $1,700 brand, new laptop. The DVD player
does not work; I had an error message about the fingerprint reader not
working; the volume bar disappeared; the Windows Mail lost sound on incoming
e-mail; and I don't know what else and the machine is less than a month old
and, so far, seldom used due to time constraints! I am not happy. I called
Dell 12 times with no luck on a software issue on it. Thanks for responding,
Gary.

Sorry to hear about all the problems you are having with your new Dell.
There is not much point in worrying about the mail sound until the volume bar
issue is fixed.

The new mail sound setting is found under Control Panel, Sound, Sounds,
scroll down in the Program list until you see New Mail Notification.
Select it, then it should identify the assigned sound file, typically named
"Windows Notify.wav". You can also click the Test button to hear what
it sounds like.
