Lost my settings - can I get them back?

Hi

I had to reinstall Outlook 2007 when I bought a new computer recently.
Because I backup Outlook using the Microsoft Tool I was able to retrieve my
pst file. However, all my customizations have gone (including categories,
colour scheme etc). Is there any way of getting those settings back or is
there a file I ought to back up in future to ensure I don't lose them again?

The only way to backup Office 2007 settings (AFAIK) is to use the User State
Migration Tool.

If by category settings, you mean your master category list, that's stored in the .pst file. All you need to do is use the same .pst file as your default store, and you'll see those settings that the store contains.

Hello Sue

I'm not sure if I do mean the master category settings. I created my own
categories and added them to all 800 contacts. If I use the same pst file as
I did before I reinstalled Outlook, will my contacts still be categorized?

On that note, is there a step-by-step guide you could recommend to using my
old pst file rather than the new one that is created automatically when
Outllook is freshly installed? I'm not sure I can remember how to dump the
default file and make my old one the new default.
