Lost my home network

Guest

I have 4 computers on my home network. I call them FANCY, DELL, ASUS,
hpavilion.

My network, MSHOME, is no longer recognized, but it used to be. When I try
to "view network computers" I get a message that MSHOME is not accessable. I
cannot ping FANCY (I get TIME OUT) from any of the others, but I can get a
response from the router (Motorola WR850G IP address 192.168.10.1) and can
ping DELL (192.168.10.4) and ASUS, 192.168.10.3.
Browstat on the computer I'm writing thisASUS gives the following:
Status for domain MSHOME on transport
\Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{53F8D312-05F1-46CA-AA21-AA99E4B91E41}
Browsing is active on domain.
Master browser name is: FANCY
Could not connect to registry, error = 53 Unable to determine build
of browser master: 53
Unable to determine server information for browser master: 53
1 backup servers retrieved from master FANCY
\\FANCY
Unable to retrieve server list from FANCY: 53

Any idea how to fix the problem?

Any idea what changed just before your workgroup became no longer recognized?
How many computers show it as no longer recognized?

My guess is you have a personal firewall problem on one or more computers.

If it isn't a firewall problem, run "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" on all
4 computers, and compare the output.

I'm getting error 53 on FANCY, which isthe only one I"ve left 'computer
browser' active (taht I know of).
So, two questions: 1) whats error 53 with respect to browstat? and 2) should
I disable rather than turn off 'computer browser' service on the other ones?
That service (even if I put "MANUAL" starts by itself when I reboot.

More detail: I ran your macro on this computer (obviously you can tell it's
ASUS):

I'm getting error 53 on FANCY, which isthe only one I"ve left 'computer
browser' active (taht I know of).
So, two questions: 1) whats error 53 with respect to browstat? and 2) should
I disable rather than turn off 'computer browser' service on the other ones?
That service (even if I put "MANUAL" starts by itself when I reboot.

CDiag is most useful if run on more than one computer simultaneously, and / or
in conjunction with browstat. So far, what we know is from Asus only. Asus:
- Can't resolve address of, or ping, Fancy.
- Can access Dell with no problem.
- Can't resolve address of, or ping, HPavilion.

An "error = 53" is a name to address resolution problem. You get that from
browstat, or from Network Neighborhood, when a computer can send out NetBIOS
datagrams advertising its role as a server on the LAN, but can't (or won't)
respond to NBT address resolution queries.

There are a boatload of reasons why a computer might (or might not) send out NBT
server advertisements, but might not (or might) respond to NBT address
resolution queries. So many that some helpers here claim that the browser is
unreliable, and advise you to simply map shares by ip address and be done with
it.

If you maintain your LAN consistently, you should have no problems. You have to
understand the limitations, though, and tune your browser array carefully. For
more information:
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/04/nt-browser-or-why-cant-i-always-see.html>
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/windows-9x-9598me-and-browser.html>
<http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winntas/deploy/prodspecs/ntbrowse.mspx>
<http://www.microsoft.com/technet/archive/win95/w95brows.mspx>

Judging from just your CDiag from Asus, though, I think you have more of a
problem than a simple browser conflict. We really need CDiag and browstat from
all 4 computers to effectively diagnose the problems, though.

As you can see I cannot access FANCY from any of the other computer, and
it's the only one that has computer browser active!

C

Chuck

As you can see I cannot access FANCY from any of the other computer, and
it's the only one that has computer browser active!

Actually, you have 5 cases of cannot access at all.
1) Asus can't access Fancy (can resolve address).
2) Dell can't access Fancy (can resolve address).
3) Fancy can't access Asus (can resolve address).
4) Dell can't access Asus (can't resolve address).
5) Asus can't access HPavilion (can't resolve address).

So you've got several problems there. Let's take a look at "browstat status"
and "ipconfig /all" for all systems please.

G

Guest

I thought I had provieded browstat status and ipconfig /all for all
computers, but I admit they seem to change when I make the browser in active.
Ive inactivated it on all computers except FANCY. If I inclued every bit
of data for all the cojputers the limit is reached, so I'll send them in
Three or 4 parts:

DELL to follow (when my wife let's me get to it, probably tomorrow). Did
you find any information so far tht would help me find my network?

Well, we are fast eliminating suspects. Please reread my slightly improved
articles about browstat and ipconfig.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/browstat-utility-from-microsoft.html>
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/reading-ipconfig-and-diagnosing.html>

What Operating System (name, version, service pack) on each computer? If XP Pro
on any, Advanced or Simple File Sharing?

Look at the browstat article in particular, at the last case shown. There are
four common causes of the "error = 53". Browstat shows no excessive protocols,
and ipconfig shows acceptable node types. That leaves us with a corrupted LSP /
Winsock, and firewall problems.

If you like, read my compressive troubleshooting guide.

And I'll look forward to seeing logs from Dell. And CDiag from HPavilion might
help too.

How do I detrmine which type of file sharing I have?

OS:DELL XPpro SP1, ASUS XP Home: FANCY XP PRO SP2; Hpavilion XP home.

XP Home is stuck with Simple File Sharing. XP Pro could have either.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/file-sharing-under-windows-xp-pro.html>

Looking at the three CDiag logs, you can see that each computer can access
itself and at least one other computer. This makes physical connectivity issues
pretty remote possibilities.

Any server (any computer being accessed thru the network) that uses SFS can't
provide administrative resources. I'll bet Fancy is running SFS, or is using
Guest authentication anyway. Those "error = 5" in browstat are normal for Guest
authentication, because Guest does not have access to the registry.

Look at the 4 browstat logs. All 4 computers report Fancy as the master browser,
so no browser conflict.

Fancy has no problem with accessing itself. Dell and HPavilion return "error =
5" (access denied), and Asus returns "error = 53" (name not found), when trying
to access the registry on Fancy. And note that Fancy is reporting 3 servers
(I'll bet it's seeing itself, Dell, and HPavilion). So start with looking for
the problem with Asus, and look at both the firewall, and LSP/Winsock issues.

I closed down the firewall and browstat still gives the following message:
Status for domain MSHOME on transport
\Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{53F8D312-05F1-46CA-AA21-AA99E4B91E41}
Browsing is active on domain.

of browser master: 53
Unable to determine server information for browser master: 53
1 backup servers retrieved from master FANCY
\\FANCY
Unable to retrieve server list from FANCY: 53

So, I need to "look at LSP/Winsock issues.
How do I do that? And should I change anything on FANCY, or just ASUS?
BTW, I also deleted all user accounts (except my admin acct) on FANCY and
ASUS.

What firewall (what brand) (and on which computer) did you shutdown? Remember,
some personal firewalls don't react properly when shutdown.

Help with LSP / Winsock problems:
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/problems-with-lsp-winsock-layer-in.html>

Try working on just one computer at a time - start with the ones reporting the
"error = 53".
<http://www.microsoft.com/resources/...00/server/reskit/en-us/cnet/cnbd_trb_ettg.asp>
To determine the cause of an Error 53 message

1. From the Start menu, open a command prompt.
2. At the command prompt, type:

net view \\<hostname>

where <hostname> is a network resource you know is active.

If this works, your name resolution is probably not the source of the
problem. To confirm this, ping the host name, as name resolution can sometimes
function properly and yet net use returns an Error 53 (such as when a DNS or
WINS server has a bad entry). If Ping also shows that name resolution fails (by
returning the "Unknown host" message), check the status of your NetBIOS session.
