I have a dell demension 2400 that had xp pro on it and I got the computer
from a friend that had bought a new one. He lot the pro disk, I had a home
edition disk so I ran the hom,e to erase all his personal info and
personalize the computer..... Any way I bought a pro edition and put it on
it.. As I was installing it I saw where it asked what partion and indicated
that 9g of my hard drive was unobtanable..I tried to remove the partion or
reformat as the hard drive is formated ntsf.. I installed the program any way
and iot works perfect but that 9 g is gone.. It is a 39g hard drive and says
that only 30g is usable.. I ran the xp pro disk again and the same result
happened.. Any Ideas???? Thanks

This useful little program shows file statistics including a graphical
display by file type, here http://windirstat.info/ Just let the mouse
pointer hover on the graphic to display the file extension.

If I understand your question, and the steps you took, (which I am not sure
I do...), it could be a hidden partition from Dell that would be used to
restore the system.

It's also likely that the manufacturer is calculating 1GB differently.
