I had opened a word document that was an attachement in an email i recieved.
(I jsut clicked open and not save). I did a lot of work on the word document
just clicking save as i go and assuming that it would be saved in my
documents. I clicked save one more time before i closed it (after about 5
hours work!) and now i can't find it anywhere!!. Its not in recent docs in
word and i have performed a search on all the things that i think it could be
named. Any one have any Idea where windows would put this thing?? I would be
so grateful.

Check the original email attachment. When you did a "Save", the file
attachment was modified from within the email message.

Do a drive search of your entire drive.

If you enter *.doc

it should find all of your documents

If you did all this while it was still an attachment, you won't find it in
your documents. You must save the document to your hard drive before
opening and working on it and saving it. Doesn't work when doing so while
it is an attachment.

That depends on what email client OP uses. Some will extract the
attachment to a temp area and invoke Word on that copy.

IMHO, OP should try two things, both of which have already been
suggested. 1: open the original email, and check whether the changes
were saved to the attachment there. 2: search the disk for *.doc (or
*.docx, if that was the extension) files.

It is most probably gone. If you did not use the Save As option and only used the
Save option then I am afraid the Word\*.doc document is gone

You have to use Save As and giving the file a name not just Save

If you opened it from your mail, it's held in a temporary internet file or
temporary file folder.

They aren't saved anywhere else unless you explicitly do so, but even that
*does not change the copy held in the email*.

It's in a temp folder, if it still exists.

You may need to go into Explorer, to Tools, Options, View, Show Hidden Files
and Folders to find the temp folders. Once that's done, look in
C:\Documents and Settings\Account name for the various temp and TIF
folders.

I would suggest downloading and installing Agent Ransack, a free very fast
search utility:

http://www.mythicsoft.com/agentransack/

Install it, and at the "C:\Documents and settings\your account name" folder,
right-click, choose Agent Ransack. Now, enter *.doc in the file name
field, and click start. At the end, click on the Modified column title to
sort by date and time, and use that as a starting point.

You may also need to search through *.tmp files as well.

Do a Search for all .doc files and arrange the list by date. If you
know you saved it about 5:00 last evening, e.g., you might see it in a
TIF folder. Double-click any candidate, and if it opens correctly, Save
As to a preferred folder with an appropriate name. If it was saved in
the TIF folder, the "name" will be random alpha-numeric characters, I
suspect.
