Lost email in "Sent Item" folder

Dear all,

We're using Exchange 5.5 SP4 and Outlook2000 SP3. A user found that some of
his email was lost from his "Sent Items" folder recently. The "Sent Items"
folder only has few items so far. It's unreasonable.

I inspected the problem and his outbound email can be saved in "Send Items"
folder now.

It's quite strange. Experts, do you have any ideas?

Autoarchive enabled for some reason?
View filters set on the folder?
Mailbox manager policies running on the server to purge older items?
