Situation is:- PC has Win XP Home edition, will not boot due too "windows
could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt
system32/DRIVERS/isapnp.sys."
Original XP Home CD and Case are missing, gone, lost.
Question is:- Can we format using Win XP Pro CD? then install that? will we
come across any problem by the installed op/sys (XP HOME) "thinking there is
somthing odd going on" ??? Thanks in advance. Dex.

Hello, Is there something odd going on here?

If you format the drive using WinXP Pro CD, there won't be anything on the drive
to worry about....the existing OS will be gone.

In this case, your concerns should be related to your license for the Pro
version. If it's an OEM version that has been used before, you're out of
luck...they get only one mate in their lifetime.

If you want to upgrade your existing OS using the WinXP Pro CD, success will
depend on the licenses and versions (SP levels) of each.

You may want to consider simply repairing your existing system. See this MSKB
article for details:

If it was a retail license and you have proof of purchase:

If it was an OEM license, you should contact the computer's
manufacturer.

You can use the XP Pro CD to boot to the Recovery Console and repair your XP Home installation. If you install XP Pro on that computer, you will need to activate it and that will be your new operating system.

Keith if you cant help dont post. We are all aware that windows XP Home will
only alow you to do so many hardware upgrades to your PC before complaining,
I wondered if the op/sys as ****ed up as it is would think similar about
trying to install another version on to it

I have the same problem with the missing file, but I do have the WinXP CD.
When trying to perform the "fix," I get a message that "access is denied." I
am, for all intents and purposes, the administrator and there is no password
set, nor is their a prompt for a password. Any and all help is appreciated.
