Loss Of TCP Printing

L

Lee

One of my XP Pro workstations just up and decided that it won't print to a
TCP port that it has been using for quite some time. It uses the same printer
driver as other workstations etc. and it still prints to other network
printers. Other XP Pro, 2003 servers, and Vista computers can still print. I
have tried removing the port and reinstalling the printer driver with no
luck. Any bodu with some pixie dust I can spread over this thing.

The it would have to be a driver problem. If you already uninstalld and
reinstalled the printer driver, I would try a Repair setup of XP.

Please be more specific...

Is this a Print server such as a HP JetDirect and you are using TCP port 9100 ?

Are you print directly to the IP address ?

Are you using a specific IP Port Monitor ?

Yes it is an HP Print server connected to an HP Printer, we have a couple
around the office that everyone prints to. Only in this case it just stopped
working. But, it still works for everyone else. I did not specify any
particular port. Keep in mind this has been working for years and just one
day quit on this workstation. The workstation in question can still print to
another HP printer server in the office. And all pings are answered.

Assuming the IP address of the printer is; 192.168.1.100

Open a Command rompt.Go to; Start --> Run
Type; telnet 192.168.1.100 9100

You should now have an open Telnet session but with no prompt -- Yes ?

If no, and there is no open window representing a Telnet session, you have a printing
communication problem at TCP port 9100

If yes, start typing anything at the keyboard off and on with carriage returns.

Then manually close the open window representing the Telnet session.

Does the printer start printing a page of nonesense (what you typed ) ?
If yes, you have a TCP or HP port monitor problem on that PC.

Dave,
Thanks for the info:
Well, This is my first use of the site. I searched and found this
thread which is about the very same problem that I face today. The
printer has worked for months...All other workstations have no
problem...This computer suddenly stopped printing to the tcp/ip
port...I can ping the port and view the printer console at that port in
IE7...I uninstalled the printer and installed 2 new printers with
different drivers (PCL 6 and RPSC) to no avail...

Then I came here, searched and found your telnet test. Great. That
worked. Problem seems to be something internal to this computer. OK.
Are we talking hardware problem or software problem? What now?
(Sometimes I hate computers...but they do exercise the mind.)

Thanks again,
Lynn

This test proves the communcation of the printer works. It proves TCP port 9100 from the PC
works. The problem is with the Port Monitor of the PC.

Crate a NEW TCP/IP printer port to this printer on the affected PC.

Thanks, it makes more sense now. That fixed it.
