I had a reboot loop with SP3 installation on a HP--AMD computer. The
following note from Microsoft support explains how we solved the problem:
Here is a summary of the key points of the service request for your records:

Action: Unable to boot to the desktop
Result: Reboot loop
Cause: After installation of SP3
Resolution: We follwed the followinf article

www.support.microsoft.com\KB\888372 . We tried Method 1
in the article. After this article we went to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Intelppm
-In that delete the Start
-Right click on Intelppm and select new and in new, DWORD
-Rename the new entry as
-Right click on the Start entry and select modify and change the value
to 4.

Known issue with XP3 & AMD. See the MS site for full details. I don't
have the link.

More accurately: known issue with XP SP3 & AMD in some HP OEM
installs.

I have installed SP3 on several AMD systems without any problems. I
do check for intelppm.sys on AMD systems though, but on the AMD
systems I have updated so far, I haven't found the offending setting.
