Looking for a Duplicate file program

I'm currently using spaceman 99 ($15 from http://www.extrabit.com/) which
is a good program for an acceptable price. This given as an example of
what I'd like - sortof.

HOWEVER since this is freeeware I'm looking for, what I'd like is a program
which will automatically delete duplicates of files which are bit-for-bit
duplicates with different name. Obviously want to retain one of them - and
I'm not picky which one, but would like to get rid of the others. Any
suggestions??

I hope you have a lot of time. Even on a fast 64 bit computer this
will take a LONG time - every single file on the drive (assuming you
don't want it to check multiple drives) has to be compared to every
other file for size, for openers. Then all files with a given size
have to be bit-compared against all others with that size. That's a
very slow process. If you're not young you might not live long enough
to see it complete.

In addition to what Al Klein says, you need to be very careful about
deleting some duplicate files and from which folders or risk screwing
up Windows or an application.

Al Little:
Actually, it doesn't take all that much time. I've run spaceman on my
entire system looking for some misplaced files and it'll run well overnight
- and be done in the morning. (3 drives totaling 450GB with app 50% used).
That to the side, however, I didn't intend to give the impression that I
was doing the entire system, just a few large but select directories.

I wrote / am writing FontOrg and in the process have managed to duplicate
an unnecessarily large number of files - I've cleaned up several 10's of
thousands by hand (I'm talking about over 175000 font files .....).

I'm letting JJS's dupekiller take a look at them now - I'll report back
after it's done.

duplicate dll's one time ... went on a spree and did some cleanup<??>.
Well, it was past time to rebuild the system anyway .

John, I just ran this against my monster hoard and then ran spaceman
against both directories. I selected the option which says keep the first
duplicate (well, if they're dupes in the same directory, does it matter?)
then moved the dupes to another directory. I then ran spaceman against
both directories and everything I had moved was a dup of something in the
original directory - and there nwere no more dupes in the original - I'm a
happy camper. Really appreciate you pointing this out to me, now I'll go
pass it on to a few others.

You're a little late, but the extra input is always appreciated. I took a
look at the recommendations and, too, find DoubleKiller to be a great piece
of freeware. Tried it on about 175000 font files, found about 2500
duplicates (which I verified with SpaceMan) and cleaned house.
