Long startup time after the logon screen

Hey everyone,
I just installed Windows XP onto a new Pentium 4 3.2Ghz
computer. After installing McAfee Antivirus, drivers and
the broadband internet, the time for the computer to load
up is approximately 5 minutes. Basically after the logon
screen, the system starts to hang. The start bar and
desktop is up, mouse is working but I cannot run any
software or even go into C drive. I checked the Windows
Task Manager, nothing seems wrong, there's no hard disk
activity either. Apart from that, I also did a diagnosis
using the msconfig and I disabled all the services and
then test them out one by one. I finally found one
service that hangs the system. Whenever the
service "Workstation" is loaded, the system took a long
time to boot up. It's status during the system hang
shows "Start Pending". Apart from that service everything
else works fine and I can boot into Windows very quickly.
I disabled that service at the moment and everything
works fine ...for now. Is there any Fix or updates
available? Please help. Thanks a lot.

Cheers

Had the same problem and it took me a while to get around to fixing it. I started by shutting everything down and clearing out the startup but it made no difference... Then, by chance I was making some changes to my network stack and noticed that I had some DNS servers in the network card configuration that were not accessible from my network. Cleared these out and it worked fine from them on. Would suggest you check the configuration of your network card including IP address, subnet mask, DNS servers, WINS servers, etc. Get this right and your machine will probably start behaving itself.
