PC freezes after start-up

My PC freezes up directly after start-up. After re-booting, sometimes even a
second re-boot is necessary, everything works fine without further problems.
I have recently ' cleaned' my hard-disk and re-installed Windows XP (service
pack 3), however after the most recent MS update (at least I think), this
problem occured. What can be the cause? Does it have to do with the windows
services??

Does it do it in safe mode?

Have you installed all the up-to-date drivers for your components
including the motherboard/chipset?

After a "Clean Install" of XP you will need to re-install your motherboard
chipset drivers and all other drives such as Sound Card, Video, Network,
Etc.

Get the drivers from your PC or motherboard manufacture's web site, DO NOT
use drivers from Microsoft's Windows Update!

there a number of reasons why
a computer can stall.

for example, the system may be
trying to access the internet but
stalls the computer instead.

I have tested the system in safe mode. No problems noticed now.

I have installed the latest drivers from the manufacter's website.

At least this rules out hardware failure I guess?

It looks like all kinds of services are trying to connect to the internet at
once during start-up. During start-up or directly after, it stalls. After one
or more re-boots the systems clearly works perfectly!!

well, it is not necessary for them
to access the internet by them
selves.

I would disable all of them .

then when you run the programs
manually, they usually ask you at
that time if you want to check for
updates.

so my suggestion is to disable
all your startups that reference
update or schedule.

Use msconfig (Start/run/msconfig) is the easiest/simplest way
How to troubleshoot configuration errors by using the System Configuration
utility in Windows XP:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;310560

If you want to dig deeper:
Try Autoruns from the MS Windows SysInternals site:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx

AutoRuns will show/list all apps/etc. that load/run when you first boot ...
(the 'Boot Execute' tab),
when you logon (the 'Logon' tab) and other programs that load
(grouped by labeled tabs) for easy viewing.

It also provides the ability to selectively allows you to stop
(use with care) any program that you don't want to load.
You can undo any changes you have made.

Note: To get additional details on an item in the list you can't
readily identify you may need to highlight the item (right click) and use
the 'Search Online' option to get the details,

The freezing problem is not consistent. Sometimes, the freezing does not
occur for a number of days and when it occurs then after one or more
re-boots, it disappears as well (strange). I need to test changes to the
start-up first, before I can conclude that the problem is solved. In the past
I already encountered this problem, which proved to be caused by a corrupt
sptd.sys from software like daemon tools. This time the cause of the problem
appears to be different. Unfortunately, this testing takes some time.
