logon window disappeared

I am using a win 2k pro desktop as the server and internet connection sharing
computer for a home network. Clients are both running win xp home. Using a
Linksey router/access point ethernet connection to the desktop. Both other
computers, a Gateway laptop, and a Dell desktop are wireless.(live in very
rural area, nothing but dialup available.) My question involves security.
When I first set this up you had to logon to the server computer to access
files or printers. All of a sudden this disappeared and now it is open
access.Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thxs.

Such things don't happen "all of a sudden" - there is always
a good reason behind. Someone might have installed TweakUI,
or maybe someone modified the registry to force an automatic
logon. Have a look here:
Win2000: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;310584
Win2003: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=324737

You should also check the Control Panel / Users and Passwords.
Maybe someone unticked the box that requires users to enter a
password.

Thanks for your reply. I checked the registry, and it's fine -no autologon key. I didn't really think there would be as the others using the computer are not that tech savy. Tweak ui is not installed. Originally I was the only one using the computers so I had the win 2k pro"server" set to automatically sign me in. When my son and his girlfriend moved in , I set them up a user account and changed the auto logon to you have to sign in with a password. That is when it quit requesting a logon from the xp laptop. Any more suggestions?

Your pseudo-server lets you access its files and folders because
your WinXP account&password is the same as a Win2000
account&password. You could easily test this: Change your
WinXP password and you will be challenged for a password
when next making a connection!

Again thank-you for your replies. Sorry that it has been so long , but I have been sick. I had already changed the logon for the "pseudo" server with no change, so I tried changing the laptop logon to another different password. Again no change. What I find strange is that when it did request a logon, both were the the same password and the "psuedo server was set to log me in automatically. It wasn't until I required a password to logon and changed it's password that it started allowing open access.???? I am really at a loss. Any and all suggestions are appreciated .
