logon screen does not show up anymore

When my computers starts, I'm not able to logon to Windows XP as the logon
screen does not show up anymore. The only thing I can see is a blue screen
with the Windows XP logo in the middle. It does not help to try to start XP
in safe mode.

With ALT-TAB tells I can choose 'Windows Logon' but nothing appears. I tried
to logon using this invisible window but nothing happened.

I did. No key combination works. ALT-TAB also only worked one time.

So pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del twice in succession did not reveal the logon
screen, nor did it raise an error.

If it is possible try closing and rebooting. On the reboot put into Safe Mode
(by frequently pressing key F8). Then see if you can use System Restore to
reset to a date prior to the start of the problem.

Windows on the original disc had no errors or problems.
How can there be errors in a cloned version?

Besides that, I cannot use System Restore because I cannot logon to
Windows...

I am not sure what you mean when you say "cloned version". I hope you are not
saying that you made a copy of an original Windows XP disk. Er -- would that
be what they call "piracy"?

No, I made a copy of my old hard disk to a new hard disk with True Image. I
also tried Drive image.
I've cloned many hard disks in my life but in this case I cannot logon
Windows on the new hard disk.

Well, I have just gone through the exercise of shutting down and then
reopening. As soon as I switched on I began hitting F8 over and over again.
It had the effect of taking me into a series of choices -- before Windows
launched. One of the choices was to launch in safe mode. I assume you know
all this stuff. Are you saying you went through this process in the same
manner?

If you did, and you cannot logon to Windows, it strikes me that there must
be something inherently risky in producing a clone of a disk including the
O/S.

It may entail a visit to a professional establishment.
