Logical Drive

Don

One of the hard drives in my computer is partitioned: C: Primary (Active)
29.8GB and Extended 8.4GB containing Logical Drive G. Drive G does not
appear under "MY COMPUTER", and can not be accessed.

I would like to either remove the extended partition and add the space to
the Primary partition, or get WinXP to recognize the logical drive G. I
need direction in either case.

I was able to locate these partitions with Drive Image's Image Explorer, and
also the WinXP Disk Management tool.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Don,

You can use disk manager (diskmgmt.msc) to delete the old partition, but to
add the free space to the existing primary would require the use of a
third-party partitioning program. Have you tried using disk manager to
rescan for drives?

Hi, Don.

Are you using TweakUI? Have to told it to NOT show Drive G:? (Been there;
done that.)

As Rick says, Disk Management can create and delete partitions, but it can't
resize one. Partition Magic and some other third-party utilities can do it.

Diskpart /extend can grow a partition into continuous unallocated free
space, but there are several "gotchas". The one that will get you in this
case is that it won't work on the system partition or boot volume. (Search
the Help and Support file for "extend" to see the details.) A roundabout
way will get the job done IF you have access to another WinXP computer:
Open the cases and temporarily move your HD to the other computer as a
secondary drive; use Diskpart /extend on that computer to grow the
partition, and then bring the drive back to your computer. As with any
powerful utility, Diskpart.exe can do as much harm as good, so be sure to
read the Help file carefully before you begin. Also, note that diskpart.exe
is NOT the same as the Diskpart command in the Recovery Console, in spite of
the identical names.

Whoops!
Diskpart /extend can grow a partition into continuous unallocated free

Make that "contiGuous unallocated free space". In other words, the disk
space immediately following the partition to be expanded must not be a part
of any existing partition.

This link http://www.bootitng.com/downloads/PARTINFO.ZIP will download
partinfo.zip from Terabyte Unlimited. At the minimum extract partinfw.exe,
but it won't hurt to extract all 3 files. Launch a command prompt and change
directory to the locate of partinfw.exe. Run partinfw.exe using the
following syntax:

partinfw >partinfo.txt

Copy and paste the contents of partinfo.txt back here.
