logging on to network connection

I have just set up a wireless network with one lap and one desk top. both
machines can see each other, and I can access teh laptop from teh desktop.
However, when I try to access the desktop from teh laptop I get a pop-up
asking for user name and passwork. I never set up a user name or password on
either machine. I've checked the desktop utility for users and passwords and
ther are none listed. Any ideas? Note the desktop is XP Pro and teh laptop
is XPhome.

On the PC, go to Control Panel and double click Folder Options.
Click on the View tab.
Scroll down to the bottom of the list in the Advanced Settings box.
Is "Use simple file sharing (Recommended)" unchecked?
That could account for your being asked to provide credentials in order to
access shared on an XP Pro system.

If you've disabled simple file sharing for some reason and wish to continue
doing so you will have to create matching user accounts on both machines. These
accounts must be identical in user name and password.

If you're still having problems accessing shares on the PC, you might want to
post your question to the Windows XP Networking and the Web newsgroup.

Good luck

On the XP Pro machine open either MyComputer or Explorer.
On the menu bar click Tools > Folder Options > View tab.
Scroll to the bottom of the list and Uncheck "Simple File Sharing".
Click Apply > Ok.

Do not share your entire C: drive or any other that contains invaluable data,
only share specific folders/files.
In MyComputer or Explorer, Right click on the folder or file you want to share.
Click "Sharing and Security.." in the popup list.
Click the "Sharing" tab.
Select the option to "Share this folder".
Click the "Permissions" button.
Configure the permissions to what you want.
Click Apply > Ok.
Click the "Security" tab.
Configure the permissions to what you want.
Click Apply > Ok.

If that fails to allow access, you may need to add the IP of each machine into
each machines firewall trusted zone.

I have never been successful on a Home network without using both a user name
and a password.

I have. Several times. In fact, I've never had to use either.
