lockup of pc during fax install with fully WIN XP with all critical patchs

I recently 9/14/03 tried to add fax capabilities to WIN
XP using the printers and fax support buttons to install
the MSFT fax package included on the WIN XP setup disk -
the fax capabilities setup completly locks up the PC -
requiring a hard boot (power sequence) to unlock it.
Multiple attempts at finishing off the installation
consistantly led to complete lockup. I had previously
added MSFT fax support from the WINXP on an old
installation many months ago without problems (I needed
to completly reinstall WINXP from scratch due to a SCSI
driver problem (those WIN 2000 drivers DON'T always work
for WINXP and when they don't they can really whack your
system). Has anyone at MSFT recently tried adding MSFT
fax support to the most patched version of XP? Has anyone
out there tried adding fax support recently? I have
noticed that MSFT doesn't do a particularly good job with
regression testing of their patches. Seems like they
could really use those 5000 new people that Gates said
they will hire!

Usually indicates incompatible modem drivers. Is your analog fax modem on
the Windows XP HCL list?
