locking thumbdrive...

Hello,

I am posting to this ng because I really don't know any other ng to
post to regarding my question. And I've searched Usenet for an answer,
but to no avail.

I am using Windows XP Prof, and have a PNY 1GB thumbdrive/flashdrive.
I'm looking for a program that I can use to lock folders on my
thumbdrive. I've tried many different folder locking programs, but I
haven't found the perfect one yet (free, small, etc.). I prefer to not
use a "vault" type program, where the program creates a file of a
designated size, then you "lock" or "hide" folders/files in that file.
Does anyone have any advice?

Create a zip file and password protect it. Drag and drop files into it.

If you use a zip file choose your password carefully. There are many free
password crackers out there- I have 3 and they do work.

Thanks for the replies and the info. One thing I'm having a problem
with is when I create a password protected zip file, every file inside
file is also password protected. Is there something I could do
differently?

Bottom line: I want to be able to password protect a folder on my
thumbdrive, be able to access it from any computer (even if the
computer doesn't have the program installed), and view (or whatever)
multiple files, such as jpegs, etc.

Most of the "Name Brand" Flash drives now offer a form of
Encryption with password protection for their drives. SanDisk
has a free tool for their MiniCruzer I use. So I would check
your vendor's website for an equivalent tool. Just be sure the
content of the Flash is backed up before enabling encryption.
On the chance your Flash drive is from SanDisk, here's the

Viewing content is another matter all together. Things like Quick
Time (.Mov) and Real Audio will need their native players or
a substitute. Even Jpg may be an issue on older 9X/ME PCs
where there isn't a native viewer.

Believe the program provided by Sandisk meets the description that the OP
doesn't want. At least by the observation of same on my Cruzer 1GB.
