Using Windows XP. I am the only one using the computer. Out of nowhere I am
told that the computer is locked and needs a password to unlock it. How do I
unlock the computer and eliminate the need for a password?

There is a setting in screensaver that prompts for a password "On resume,
prompt for password". There is a similar setting for coming out of standby,
this one is in "Monitor power".
You can unlock the PC using the same password as you login with or if blank
just leave it blank.
