Local Area Connection - Status Limited or No connectivity

I'm attempting to setup a home network (wired), with a ME and new XP home
edition computer to transfer files. My local area connection indicates the
status as "Limited or No connectivity". I've tried to repair the connection,
Newing the IP address, but it fails and directs me to the network administor
(which is me).

I'd like to setup up the network to share files and printers, but the
Internet connection. Once the files are transferred, the old ME computer
will be retired. If each computer can access the Internet independently
that's great. I'm not looking to create a ICS.

Any suggestions on how best to correct the IP address problem.

If you're simply using a cross-over cable to connect 2 computers (and please
don't use a straight-thru aka patch cable), you should expect that error.
Without a DHCP server connected to the computers, there's no where to get IP
address assignments.

With Windows XP, the computer will get an APIPA address. I'm not sure about
Windows ME though.
