Loading Windows XP

I have been using Windows XP Home (Upgrade) for about a
year - no problems at all. I have just fitted a new hard
drive (Samsung Spinpoint 80GB). I loaded my copy of
Windows ME then tried to upgrade to XP and the system
keeps hanging. On the first failure I received: (Setup
Cannot Continue Error: 3E6h). I checked with MS support
with no obvious fixes. Tried a clean install again and
again the system hangs, this time with no error. Any ideas
anybody?

Have you tried installing WinXp DIRECTLY, formatting
the HDD in the process.
I believe you can do this - It will ask for your ME media
and then install Xp.

Thanks Pat,

Yes I have tried a direct load - unfortunately my version
of ME is part of a recovery package (Packard Bell) and
although it is a licensed package is not accepted by
Windows XP. I have also tried everything recomended by
Microsoft including disconnecting all peripherals etc??
The only thing that is different since the original load
is the hard drive which is running perfectly with ME?

Cheers Pat,

Sorted out my XP load. It took a re-format of the 'C'
drive, reload of ME, disconnecting all peripherals,
disabling sound and network in BIOS, and a clean boot
of 'ME' disabling all drivers before it worked!! I could
almost quote my XP license number i put it in that many
times!! Operating systems used to be a lot easier to
load - cheers.
