loading Windows XP SP2

I recently purchased a barebones system that needed to have harddrive
installed and other components wanted and ready to go. I also purchased a new
OEM Windows XP full OS. I started to install it on an old harddrive that was
formatted using the Windows XP. Halfway through the install I get a popup
stating that some files on Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 CD are
needed. Insert Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 CD into drive selected
below and click enter. Copy files from D:\i386. I can cancel and it
continues to load but only some of windows loads missing many files. What an
I doing wrong. Thanks for any help.

How does one have xp format the drive when xp isnt running yet...When
installing a clean xp,you should be booting to xp cd,select install xp,new
copy,
delete the partition, create one, then xp cd formats and installs auto.If its
asking for SP2,you have a copy of xp installed from someone,it all needs to
be
deleted with a new computer.

I do boot from the cd and it asks if you want windows xp to try to repair the
incomplete installation, I tried that as well but it always gets to the same
message. I can cancel out and it continues to load but only a portion of
windows loads. I can load some programs but some critical files missing, I
reboot and when asked to format I hit yes and try again with same results.

This is true.

As for your original problem, if the cd is good (you can test it in
another system), then you have other hardware issues. It doesn't matter
if the hardware is new; in fact if hardware is going to fail it will
usually do so pretty quickly. I'd test the RAM and then the hard drive.
Here are some general hardware troubleshooting steps:

Thanks for the info, hard drive ok ram ok. Finally took it to a shop and was
told it was a bad cd rom. It apparently stopped readind when it reached the
service pack 2 section??? Don't know that much about it but it is ok now.
Repair shop said it happened on his disk also thats why he figured it must be
the cd rom. Thanks for the help, windows xp working and wallet $65.00 lighter.

I'm glad you got it sorted. Thanks for taking the time to let us know
the issue. Sorry about the $65.00. ;-)

Cheers,
