Loading personal settings - loging off loop

Hi:

System: XP Home
one user, no network, norton antivirus 2005

When clicking on user, The system goes from: Loading personal settings to
logging off in approx 2-3 seconds. Can't use safe mode. can't do anything
with the system.

It appears to boot okay, desktop background picture appears momentarily.

Is there a work-a-round, etc. to get passed the login logoff loop?

Any words of wisdom is welcome.
