when booting it gets to the login screen after about 5 minuites then you log
in and it says the normal loading personal settings screen and you can see
the background get loaded instantly but it just sits with the settigns screen
and the background for up to an hour i have waited before just turning it off

me too. Did you figure it out? I have a 3 machine file
sharing/printing network thru a router with DSL, 2 XP machines, 1 XP
Pro. About 1 out of 3 times logging in, it freezes at loading your
personal settings. Only consistent precursor is in System Event log,
where a browser problem 8021 notes it couldn't get a list of servers
from the other XP, and an 8032 browser error (its stopping).

Anybody?

I had a similiar problem. Hit ctrl alt del, then enter and the screen should
come up (it did for me anyway). If you get that far check under control
panel, then add/remove programs. See if you have Intel Application
Accelerator, if you do remove it and try again. Worked for me but that
doesn't mean a darn thing.
