I have Athelon 1800+, 512MB ram, 160GB HD with Win 2K Professional SP4, When
I turned on my PC, the machine won't start, instead send out message like
"Operation system can not start start because software problem.... Contact
your support person with problem: Loader Error 3"

My question 1) What is Loader Error 3"
2) How to fix this problem.

Thank you for your help.

Can you get into safe mode? Did you recently install SP4 Rollup? Have you
tried using the install CD, going into recovery mode and giving /fixboot a
shot?

1) No, I can't get into safe mode in the beginning.
2) I did use the WIn2K Cd to repair, I can use CD repair mode to start my PC
without any problem. Once I get into my PC, I try to scan and defragmenation
my C drive. I also update to the latest patch for both window 2K and internet
securtity and scan my HD for virus again. There is no virus, no bad sector in
my HD at all. But when I restart my PC again based on HD, I got the same
message. Looks like, every time if I need to start my PC, I have to go
through the Win2k CD -> repair mode, then I can start my PC. Doess this help?
Thank you for your reply. Please let me know any othe questions. Thanks.

The latest updates would be SP4 Rollup. Give the recovery console a shot and
try /fixboot if you don't mind? From there - if that doesn't work - I'm
going to probably request you contact support through the normal channels.
Support for updates are free so it's just a matter of time spent on the
phone but you're not the first person I've seen with this problem after the
update to SP4 rollup. Note that it didn't seem to happen with SP4 and I
didn't see it in the list of known bugs anywhere.

<snip>

1) Insert the CD, when prompted press a key to boot to CD, when asked pick
the R for recovery console then log on to an account through there and use
the fixboot switch. If you have questions about RC then go ahead and type
help.
2) See answer #1 as they tied in together.
3) No worse than you are right now.

Description of the Windows 2000 Recovery Console:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;229716

If worse comes to worse then:

(Repair Installation for 2k)
How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade of Windows 2000:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/292175

Right after having done so install a firewall, configure it, install and
then update anti-virus, and then, finally update to SP4.
