Loader cant initialize service

What causes a "loader couldn't initialize service" error
message on boot up? When I click OK, all is fine except
that some of my programs to be run at startup aren't
loaded.

Find out what "loader" is and you'll be closer to your answer. Look for
clues on the startup page of the system configuration tool (Start> Run>
MSCONFIG) and in Event Viewer.

"loader" is the XP OS loader, I'm suprised that you didn't know this being an MVP. The error is caused by something that is trying to load before the OS has finished load. The trick is to check the logs to see what this is and maybe delay it's loading until the OS loads. I'm guessing that you might find that an application you recently installed either doesn't run or doesn't run correctly, that is most likely the culprit. Try uninstalling it and reboot to see if you still get the error

"loader" is the XP OS loader

"Loader" is not a term that commonly appears in this operating system's
error messages. Many programs and some boot managers (not XP's) use this
term. There a few documents from earlier versions of Windows about "a
device loader could not" however the "device" (usually a *.vxd) is named in
that message.

I'll stand by my suggestion that finding out where "loader" is coming from
- software or drivers (not XP itself) - is the starting point for resolving
this. Using MSCONFIG, as suggested, is one method that can be used to
pinpoint a startup item is not loading properly.
