Little Shortcut Arrows

Is there a way to get rid of the little arrown in the white box in the bottom
left hand corner of a shortcut?

Somebody told me there was a program called tweakui, that was available to
download from the internet, but I only want to remove the arrow from one
shortcut, so I don't really want to download anything for a one time use.

It's not a matter of one-time use, using TweakUI will remove the
arrows from *all* shortcuts.

As far as I know, there's no way to remove it from just a single
shortcut.

Start>Run>Regedit>Ok
Navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\lnkfile
Delete the IsShortcut registry value.
restart.
This will remove the shortcut arrows from the desktop icons

Get TweakUI nevertheless: It is useful for a lot of other things, and
the alternative way of removing the arrows has unpleasant side effects
on the functionality of shortcuts. Use TweakUI - one of the XP
Powertoys from (if you have installed XP SP1)
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

If you have not installed SP1, the earlier version can be found at
http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Install/2/WXP/EN-US/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe

Once installed you will find it in Start - All Programs - Powertoys for
Windows XP

Its Explorer - Shortcut allows you to change; I suggest you try 'light
arrow' which is very inconspicuous, but allows you to distinguish a
shortcut from an actual file (very desirable when setting out to delete
things)

Don't. that has side effects reducing the functionality. One IIRC is
to prevent your having working hot keys for them, but there may have
been others. The author of TweakUI (a highly respected member of the
developers) feels so strongly that merely installing TweakUI will
restore that setting
