Little red X

When I save some Word documents I see a little red X surrounded by a circle
to the left of the animated green 'saving' indicator bar at the bottom of
the screen. What the heck does that mean? The red X does not seem to be
any more than a warning or something that provides information. I can't
find any mention of this red X in any of my help books. How can I get rid
of the red X--it makes me nervous.

Thanks for any help.

That is almost always an indication that an image has been called for in the
document or file, but it is not located where the document says it is. Thus
it cannot be displayed.

Mentioning your OS and Office versions might well make a difference in the
answers you get here, you know.

Only if it's in the document itself (see
http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/RedX.htm). In this case, the red X seems
to be something on the status bar, and the reason no one has answered this
is that presumably no one has a clue. However, since the block next to
Background Save is Spelling and Grammar Status, I would guess that the red X
(assuming it's superimposed on a book) means that there are spelling errors
in the document.

It's a cancel button for the save operation.

I'm guessing Word creates a new file during the saving process and in a last
step replaces the old file with the new one. If you are able to press the
button before that last step occurs, you can cancel the save operation.

It's available in Word 2007 when you open or save a document. Can't say
anything about older versions.

It is only visible if open or save takes enough time. So if you have a fast
computer/network, it's unlikely that you will see it. I noticed that I can
always get it to display when I'm manipulating a 200 page document on a
network share.

Okay. I have a freestanding PC and deal mostly with smaller documents.
