List in favorites bar in explorer in XP out of alphabetical order

V

Yet another example of how Windows XP seems to be a giant step
backwards, compared to Windows Me:

The folders inside the favorites folder, appear in alphabetical order
in the favorites bar in Explorer 6 in Windows Me, but they are not
sorted into alphabetical order in Explorer 6 in Windows XP Pro!

The favorites bar is the bar that appears to the side of the window in
Explorer, when the appropriate icon in the toolbar is clicked or the
appropriate choice in the menubar is made. In Windows XP Pro, this
favorites toolbar in Explorer, quickly becomes disordered and out of
alphabetical order as more and more favorites folders are created and
appear in the favorites bar.

It is unbelievable, that the Windows and Explorer Help Sections, the
newsgroups, and the web, have ignored this basic problem with the
Favorites bar in the explorer browser in Windows XP Pro. If the
favorites folders list in the favorites bar in Explorer is out of
alphabetical order and cannot be put into alphabetical order there is a
real problem.

Some info I found that did not solve the problem:

Right clicking in the favorites menu does not create a sort by name
option in the popup menu as it is supposed to with some versions:
)

'Installing applications or hand-modifying the Programs or Favorites
menu can break their sort order. If you have IE5 installed, right click
on any item on the menu and select 'Sort by Name'. For IE4 you will
need to delete the registry value 'Order' from the key
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MenuOrder\Start
Menu\Menu] or
[[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MenuOrder\Favorites\Menu]
respectively for the Programs menu or Favorites menu.'

Evidently you tried the wrong one. Click Favorites on the IE Top Tool Bar -
Where it reads: File, Edit, View, Favorites. Once done, right click any
listing, Sort by name. The same can be done by adding Favorites to the
Start Menu.

You know, you could ask for help instead of ranting. Sorting favorites
alphabetically is done the same way it was done on IE 5 or 6 in any other
Windows version. It's real easy.

Continuing to research the difficulty, I found that the problem was
that the instructional material I had found, did not make clear, that
the favorites are put into alphabetical order, through view - favorites
- right click on folder - sort by name - in the MENUBAR. I tried this
method right clicking on a folder in the FAVORITES BAR and it did not
work. I so rarely use Favorites in the menubar, it did not occur to me
to use do the right click sort by name trick using the menubar, it did
not occur to me that such would work with the menubar but not with the
favorites bar.

Re ranting, I thought I said these things make XP SEEM backwards.

Am I wrong to think that there IS a difference comparing XP to ME,
which is that ME automatically sorts favorites in the favorites bar
alphabetically, whereas with XP you have to use the right click on
favorites list, sort by name trick?

"This week's computer tip" at:

http://archives.gophercentral.com/index.php?op=news&id=4367

says that alot of people have been having this problem.

See my reply to Kelly.

Whatever my folly, there seems to be a real difference between XP and
ME, which is that apparently XP has to be ordered to sort the favorites
alphabetically whereas ME did this automatically.

Right clicking on a folder and then clicking sort by name is a
counterintuitive method. It would seem that such would result in the
contents of the particular folder right clicked on being sorted
alphabetically as opposed to the folders in general being sorted
alphabetically.

FYI, for future reference, comparing WinXP to WinMe is a lot like
comparing a Lexus to a Yugo -- the only similarities are entirely
superficial.
