Hi Suzanne,
Not necessarily a defect. Not all TTF or OT fonts have or require all features
although certain ones would be desirable. I
have a barcode font that if used in Word 2003 shows the font name when you turn off the 'live preview', but using the font in Word
2007 it just shows bars in the font list
There isn't, as far as I can tell any check in Office beyond what Windows checks for
displaying a font name
Some Barcode TTF fonts may only be 4-8K in size (they don't have a lot of glyphs) and are installed for
specific uses by certain applications, likely with little thought to how they may work in Office apps <g>.
BTW, take a look in the Office 2007 \Program Files\Office 12\ folder and you may find an additional MS font that Office has, but
may not install, SegoeChess.ttf When installed, Word shows only the font name which doesn't appear to be in Segoe UI characters
<g>.
==============
This would be a defect of the font, however. Note that some of the symbol
fonts show a font name that does not reflect the characters in the font;
there must be something coded into the font that supplies the display name.
