So I've beeen reading up on Linux . Seems that is considered to be smaller and quicker than Windows by virtue of the fact that it mainly runs on memory rather than HDD .

So if I have a AMD64 3400 with 1Gb memory and 250Gb HDD and XP Pro ,
and a,
Intel P4 2.4 ghz with 2 Gb of memory and a 20Gb HDD and Linux(Choose a distro),

and I want to re-code an avi. file , edit and burn it to DVD,
which will do the job quickest.

:confused::blush:

Technically Linux is quicker, however, there are a few factors to factor in the equation.

Suse is known for being a bit of a slowcoach, although they have improved ... Ubuntu is quite nippy as an OS but using the gnome desktop environment and can 'see' a lag when using menus. The KDE desktop in Kubuntu is quicker ... you can install both and just "log-out" and back in to the other.

Then there is the "speed" of the hardware ... I could go on but I'm not quite sure of your question.

Aside from games, Linux can do anything Windows can, you just need the right software ... which is free. ;)
