linking styles (I think!)

Hi,

I want my document to use 2 of my own styles. 1 will be a heading e.g.

1. Heading

2. Another

And the second one will be outline numbering

1.1 Subheading

1.2 Subheading again

The thing is - I want the second style to follow on from the first.
i.e. it knows to be 2.1 or 5.1 or whatever. Do I link them or
something? how do I do it?
