linking emf file - not the icon, the graphic

Hi Everyone.

software: word 2002 sp/2

I'm trying to link or embed emf files into my word doc. When I do
INSERT-OBJECT-CREATE FROM FILE-and click the LINK TO FILE
BOX-BROWSE-and select my emf file-click OK, only an icon shows up in
my word document - not a graphic representation of the contents of the
emf file. I can do this fine if it's an rft file so there's something
strange going on with this particular format. I've downloaded about 5
different emf editors and associated the emf files with each but the
same problem always happens.

If I right click on the icon it put in as my linked object I get
options about activating or editing the 'package'. I don't want this
emf file to be a package, I just want to view it as a picture in my
word document and have it update when the original file is
changed....I've also tried doing a paste special, selecting the 'paste
link' box and then highlighting 'as file' but then the 'links' options
in the edit menu is greyed out and it thinks it's just a picture.

Can anyone help me? I'm starting to go crazy!!!

Thanks.

Actually, "wishistillhad2000" has cross-posted to half a dozen NGs,
including m.p.office and a couple of Word ones, most of them (including
microsoft.public.office) deprecated ones.

Did you try:
1. select icon
2. Edit\Linked XXX Object\Convert... to display the dialogbox "Convert"
3. uncheck "Display as Icon"

(im using W2K - do know if WXP is different)

Word2002 in W2K accept EMS.files without funny business. Unless you have a
very, very good reason, avoid the object method which (in this respect) is
clumpsy, slow, unprecise, and not least: the use of power + use of desk
space is more than huge.
