Mic in - microphone

Line in - usually a device like an stereo amp , cable box etc

For instance some use the line in to make CDs from their LPs or tapes.

Tape/Turntable-> amp ------------cord into -> Line in

Or they are using the S-video picture input on their TV capture card
and they record the sound from the cable box from a line out
----------> Line in.

Or you have a mixer or POD amp emulator to record guitar or some other
muscial instrument into the PC via LINE IN .

Sorry, I'm not sure that i understand your idea. Maybe, some device you
mentioned are not popular in my country. Can you explain more about what
Turnable of (Tape/Turnable) and POD amp is ? Thanks ?

They used to have these things long ago called turntables
that play vinyl records before they had CD players.

Turntable is the US word for it - like Denon or Linn Sondek turntable
, the thing the disks spin on that plug into a stereo amp to play
vinyl records.

Tapes - casette player/recorder or reel to reel player that plugs into
a stereo amp.

Basically any SOURCE of sound like a CD player /DVD player that plugs
into a stereo amp . Of course many people buy an all in one unit -
where everything is built in.

You know you have a source :

Turntable or Tape player or CD player or DVD player ----> plugs into
an AMPLIFIER which really is two main units a preamp + a high power
output amp that takes the low level signal in from a source
(turntable/tape/cd etc) into a preamp then its amplified at high power
section out into your speakers.

But the preamp part which is still low level - has some OUTPUTS out to
auxiliary out or tape out etc - that you can plug into another low
level input device like your sound card . If you tried to plug the
speaker output (Hi ouput to the speakers) into your sound card in - it
would probably fry your card.

A pod - lots of people like to record music with their PCs using their
sound card.

You can use a MIC to record your sounds and then plug that into a
mixer and from the mixer go to your LINE IN in your sound card.

But thats a hassle. Lots of people want to play their electric guitar
but dont have the ideal sound room to record and they dont have lots
of good amps. So they built this thing called an amp modeler.

Its a box that you plug your guitar in and has lots of knobs etc where
you can select various famous amplifier tones - the output goes
directly into your sound card so theoretically you can record anytime
of the day or night - since you arent using mics and you can get a
variety of famous amp tones. Some people like them and think they are
great for recording and practicing at night etc You can use
headphones to hear the sound and some people hate them saying they
cant replace the REAL marshall amps fender amps etc.
