I purchased a copy of Winddows XP upgrade, which I was
not able to install on my computer after multiple
attempts (it locked up at 47 minutes every time). After
hours on the phone with tech support, I was sent a
replacement copy, which installed easily. In the mean
time, my son was able to install the purchased copy on
his own computer. My question is: How do I go about
purchasing the appropriate license, since I now have two
functioning copies of XP, and I only paid for one?

Hi Joni

It's good to here from someone who is responsible regarding the XP License. However, you are probably in a situation that most people don't find themselves in. I shall probably get shot down for saying this, but leave things as they are ATM.

If there are any problems, you may get a reply from Mike Brannigan, who would be able tell you the implications.

If you activate both copies of XP (via the Internet) successfully, it should
be smooth sailing, unless something happens to your son's copy. The only
disk you have is your copy, so, if a refomat and clean install were ever
required, you would hit a wall of problems at that point, but not before.
While I consider the extra OS to be just compensation for your time and
trouble, you may want to trade with your son, so that the more conservative
user has the "extra" OS. Or, just trade machines! I say this because kids
are more adventurous computer users, usually, and a major OS screwup may be
more likely to happen to him. If it necessitated a clean install, it would
be goodbye XP. Both of you should have current antivirus and firewall
software, and be very cautious with your email (MS does NOT email updates,
for instance).
Good luck!

If they had different Product Keys then they are from Microsoft's view
point separate purchases, and MS has had its slice.. So it is between
your conscience and the company you bought it from, who has provided you
with two copies.

If you used the same key but just had a replacement CD then you would
need to buy another - a second license can be bought, see
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/howtobuy/addlic.asp

But a copy at a discount store is usually cheaper
