Licensce error poping up in event log

A

Adam Raff

Good day

First a little history. We were running a windows 2000 Advanced Server
with AD. We have three servers total that are DC. Later we upgraded all of
our 2000 servers to 2003 with no issues, it has been running that way for
some time. A few weeks ago we upgraded to SP1 on all of our 2003 servers.

For the past year we have been having a problem with a license issue that
keeps popping up in our event log. I have tried everything to clear them
and it's just becoming an annoying event issue. The error is as follows:

Event Type: Error

Event Source: License

Event Category: None

Event ID: 202

Date: 11/19/2005

Time: 10:14:51 AM

User: N/A

Computer: Server1

Description:

The product Windows Server is out of licenses. Use Licensing from the
Administrative Tools folder for more information

on which users are out of compliance and how many licenses should be
purchased.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

I have gone into the license program and cleaned out the licenses but they
just come back again. Even from users that no longer work in the company.
I do not understand how to get them out of the system.

Server1 is also our DNS/DHCP server and global catalog. Server2 is our
backup

After upgrading to SP1 on our servers we started getting the following error
also:

Event Type: Error

Event Source: LicenseService

Event Category: None

Event ID: 202

Date: 11/19/2005

Time: 10:14:51 AM

User: N/A

Computer: Server1

Description:

The product IIS 5.0 is out of licenses. Use Licensing from the
Administrative Tools folder for more information on which

users are out of compliance and how many licenses should be purchased.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

----------------------------------------------------

Since upgrading to SP1. I have been also getting the following errors on
all my servers now, which look similar to the one below

Event Type: Warning

Event Source: LicenseService

Event Category: None

Event ID: 213

Date: 11/19/2005

Time: 1:28:20 PM

User: N/A

Computer: Server2

Description:

Replication of license information failed because the License Logging
Service on server Server1.domain.net could not be contacted.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

Data:

0000: 22 00 00 c0 "..À

I have tried to follow the KB article which doesn't give much info on this.
I can ping the server1, I can get into the eventlog from either server so
there is communication. The license server seems to be running on both
servers.

I do not think these errors are impotent and I can most likely ignore them.
I would love a way to stop them without turning off the service if possible

Thank You

Stop and disable the license logging service, and keep track of your
licenses manually. The service is buggy, is not mandatory, and most people
will likely suggest the same.

I think the general consensus is to disable the 'License Logging' service

Hello Adam,

Thank you for using newsgroup!

From your post, you get event ID 202 & 213 in event viewer on Windows
Server 2000. Based on your situation, I agree with our both MVPs'
suggestions. Generally, we suggest you disable the "License Logging"
service on the server.

For more related information, please refer to the following articles:

Operating Systems

you cannot manage licenses when the License Logging service starts on a
Windows Server 2003-based computer

Hope the information helps!

Thanks & Regards,

Ken Zhao
