Lenovo Startup - 2nd Try

A few days ago, I posted a message about a laptop that has a problem.
Obviously no-one knows a solution. I will try again, and see if any of you
answer:

"Hi,

I have an Lenovo / IBM Thinkpad X60s with a fingerprint sensor. It is
connected to a domain. When it is switched on at the office, where the
ethernet is plugged in, it comes on normally.

When it is switched on when it is not plugged in (e.g at home) when I log
on, it takes a few minutes for the system to come up with my icons. Even
Ctrl + Alt + Del is delayed! When the icons come, it works properly. If I
log off and log back on, it comes on as if it was online.

Does anyone know how to solve this problem?

It seems to switch on about 30 seconds faster now I Windows Updated it. I'm
not entirely sure if all of the updates are installed.

Thanks
Harry"

Could someone PLEASE help me?

Thanks
Harry

Does "comes on as if it was online" mean that it boots fast? This is a
little odd but hardly alarming.
This sounds like the computer, at the first boot, is busy trying to find
the network. Trying to find the network can take a fair amount of time.
When it finally gives up, all is well.
Does anyone know how to solve this problem?
I am not convinced that you have a problem. It sounds more like expected
behavior although a noticeable delay is unusual.
It seems to switch on about 30 seconds faster now I Windows Updated it.
I'm
not entirely sure if all of the updates are installed.
Windows Update can tell you which updates that are installed on your
computer.
Belarc will tell you the same and will notify you if any critical updates
are missing.

Hi,

Thanks for the quick reply.

"Come on as if it was online" does mean that it logs on very fast. When
online, it takes 1-2 seconds after seeing the "log-on" screen. Offline, it
takes 3-5 minutes after seeing the "log-on" screen.

I know it sounds like an expected behavior, but this laptop was a
replacement to a similar IBM ThinkPad, which was on the same user on the
same domain. It booted up fast every time I logged on.

The only difference between the two is the new fingerprint software.
Although they both have fingerprint, as soon as you swipe your fingerprint,
or press Ctrl-Alt-Del, it shows you the Windows "log-on" screen. The old one
showed you IBM's version.

The only other difference is that, while it is logging on, the old one said
something about not being able to connect to the server and that I am using
a cached version. That message does not come up on the new one.

At the moment, I think it could be the Updates or the Fingerprint Software.

Thanks
Harry

This is indeed too long. However, anything I might say would be just a
guess.

I would have expected that the old one would have taken longer to boot.
You have a network problem (but whether it causes the long boot time or not
is questionable).
At the moment, I think it could be the Updates or the Fingerprint
Software.
Too many people have no troubles which can be blaimed on the updates.

Next week the tech. support are going to look at it. Maybe it just needs
disconnecting and then reconnecting to the domain.

Also, I am not blaming the updates. I think that I might just need to
INSTALL all the updates.

Why would you expect the older one to boot slower? Actually, it takes an
extra 1-2 seconds while it finds the server. When it gets to minutes, it's
unbearable. The old one had a 1 Ghz processor and 256 MB RAM (I think). The
new one has a 1.7 Ghz processor and 1 GB RAM!!
