Laser printers duplex option

I’m looking into buying a Laser printer with the duplex option, however,
the three I’ve looked at (Samsung ML-3051ND, Brother HL-5250DN & HP
P2015D) all have a paper tray on the back. Is this the duplex output
tray or a temporary tray used during the duplex function? It makes a
big difference to me as I want to place the printer with the back side
next to the wall.

Thanks, Geri

I THINK it's a temporary tray that receives the page between the
printing of the first and 2nd sides.

At least on the HP, that's a straight-through feed. When the door is
down, the paper feeds out the back instead of bending around to the top.
It's useful for thicker paper.

A duplexer should add duplexing but still let you use either the top or
back output.

I have an older HP with a duplexer. A HPIIID. The duplexer part has
been completely trouble free.

The assembly that protudes from the rear includes both the tray for
straight thru paper handling and the intermediate or reversal tray for
duplex or two sided printing. For all the complexity of the HPIIID
printer it is suprisingly trouble free.

The short suit for this printer among many is the weight. But printers
should be considered by weight. The heavier the better. I am going to
an auction tomorow where there will be several IIIDs. They will sell
for less than scrap. Cost some to rehab and outlast you and I.

Take a look at the HP LaserJet 1320 or 1320N, or the Brother HL5170DN. The
only paper tray is on the bottom.

Also, many laser printers have an option for straight through feed for heavy
materials, envelopes, etc. So you might want to keep the back side 12-15
inches from the wall.

how about a used laserjet 4000/4050 ot a lexmark optra s or optra t or an
ibm network printer 17 --high toner costs on this one.

the old optra s machines use cartridges that are rated for 17k copies and
because of the age are pretty inexpensive.

fusers in these machines are usually rated for 200k copies.
we once had a dell with a samsung engine with a fuser rated at 50k copies
that died at 25k copies.
