Large Volume of Files in Folders - Window XP NTFS -

Hi,
I am creating an archive on my network.
When users access the folder there, in time will be thousands to
hundreds of thousands of files in that folder.

I am wondering what issues we will have with windows xp opening this
folder with the large amounts of files in it? Is there away to avoid
potential problems other than creating a directory structure and
dividing up the files into folders?

I google the issue and get alot on file sizes but nothing on folder
volumes....
so if anyone could direct me to possible resources or knows of any
possible solutions... you will become my new personal hero :)

thanks,
jerm

Thousands of files should be reasonable to index (5-10 seconds), but when you
move in to the 100,000 plus range - things get a little crazy (like 30
seconds - 2 minutes). I honestly can't imagine a practical application where
one would want users looking at a folder with hundreds of thousands of files
in it.

The key is to NOT open the folder using Windows Explorer - it's just not
designed to handle that kind of volume elegantly. Unfortunately - a
directory structure is your best bet (maybe only bet).

Even something as simple as a-z folders the volume by a factor of 15-20.
For archival folders, date ranges are common.

Basically it is for more of my purposes. I want to be able to
"maintain this folder" that employees will dump thousand upon
thousands of files in.

I don't want it to crash when I "maintain" it.

I guess file directory structure seems to be the best approach to this
problem.

Observation: Win 2k refused to create any new files in a directory
with 32,767 files in it. (A program bug that caused it to fail to
delete a temporary file.)
