laptop power management with overnight download

I've adjusted my settings so that my screen saver will come on after 6 min
and then my monitor will turn off after 20min. This is so when I download
overnight I dont need to shut the lid of my laptop because of the light given
from the monitor.

However, now my monitor does not seem to turn off anymore even though the
power settings says it will shut the monitor after 20min. All that happens is
that my screen saver just keeps going. Why has my laptop suddenly decided it
wont turn off anymore???

I have done some trial and testing and the monitor does seem to turn off if
I set the monitor to turn off at 2min, 3min, I made sure my screen saver came
on first by changing the setting of that to to come on a minute earlier. Its
only 20min that wont work?????

I have reformated the laptop once but I have installed it back to normal and
even still my power settings worked after I had done so.

I have a Dell Inspiron 5150, XP Proffessional, Pentium 4 HT 3.06Ghz,
512DDRAM, 80Gb Hard Drive, CD-RW/DVD

p.s. Is this just another Microsoft being annoying again!!!

On my Thinkpad i toggle the LCD off and activate the VGA output when it's
idle - LCD gets turned off completely, no need for a screensaver.

I have more news on my problem

After further testing I have actually found out that my monitor does not
like to turn off if it is set to more than 10min. My power save scheme will
not understand that I would like my monitor to turn off after more than 10min.

Any ideas on this random problem???
