Laptop modem problem

I was recently on holiday and needed to use my dial-up modem to collect
emails. After working fine for four days I began to get error 633 - modem
already in use. The only way I could get the modem to work was to uninstall
it and then re-install. This solves the problems but only until I re-boot!

In device manager the modem properties claim that the device is working
properly.

I have searched the Microsoft Knowledge Base and consequently downloaded the
latest drivers (they were actually the same date as the ones I already had)
and re-installed but the problem persists. I now also get error 797.

I have never installed any Palm Desktop and Synchronization Software so
this cannot be the cause.

The laptop has Windows XP home and the modem is a PCtel HSP56MR-M8375.

Any help with this problem will be greatly appreciated.

Modem error 633 is typically related to Palm Pilots and
other PID's. And error 797 is related to password control.
If no PID is involved, then the possibility of a trojan or
spyware cannot be ruled out. Did the usual anti-virus, anti-
trojan and anti-adware scans?

Finally, it might also be worthwhile to remove the modem
drivers from the laptop as well as their entries in Registry
and re-install the drivers with those direct from the modem
maker or laptop maker.

Thanks!

I do have a Fujitsu Siemens Pocket L00X - do you think this might be causing
the problem?

Am free of spyware but will get rid of the drivers completely and reload
them.

I have managed to solve the problem!

I decided that maybe the port was in use and opened Task Manager. I then
clicked on the Processes tab and deleted anything (apart from taskmgr.exe)
that was not a system file one at a time. Then tried dialling with the
modem. It took a long time but eventually I found the culprit.

It was the Nokia phone software PCsuite and having taken the tick out of the
box in the start-up list all works well. I now even hear it dial-up
something I have never heard before despite there being a tick in the
appropriate box.

I hope this helps someone else!

This might help someone if you posted a little bit of the problem
along with this message. What problem did you solve?

I thought it would be obvious as this was a reply to the original problem -
evident by it being contained within the original folder.

Perhaps I expected too much!

I saw it as a new "post" and did not see it posted to an original
folder. Maybe I missed something. BTW, I hope I didn't sound sarcastic
in my original post. Didn't mean to.
