laptop hangs my pc when trying to create wireless network

i have a pc with a wireless network card connected via ethernet to my
broadband modem. i have a laptop with a wireless network. I have tried
various methods to connect the two wirelessly and I can occasionally connect
to internet on laptop through wirless. Occasionally my pc can see my shared
docs etc on laptop but not the other way round but more often than not my pc
hangs when i turn on my laptop or the wireless lan on my laptop. Please help,
am i missing something blindingly obvious. Windows manages my wireless cards,
i use the network setup wizard and usb between computers and i've tried doing
it manually - none of which creates a stable non-hanging pc network! grrrr

Hangs? What does that look like? Does it need to be rebooted or
does it only hang for 2 minutes or less?

No completely freezes, I've left it for nearly half an hour once and still
frozen. mouse and keyboard won't work so I have to turn it off by it's power
button. I can use a crossover cable and this works with no problem except
laptop can't see pc but can use internet. pc can see everything on my laptop
fine - done all the sharing of folders etc. but wiring them together defeats
the object of having wireless and it means my broadband modem is connected by
usb to pc cos ethernet is used for wiring to laptop.

that's probably a hardware or driver defect. What kind of WLAN
hardware do you use? Which adapter from which manufacturer did
you select and why? Have you installed the manufacturer's WLAN
management software or do you use the one that comes with
Windows? I always choose the latter, if I can, because the
manufacturers often deliver bad software.

You may have to get a better WLAN adapter.

It's from MSI and was already installed when I bought the computer from
Tiny/Time (who no longer exist). i think you might be right because there
sometimes seems to be conflict over whether the manufactured software or
windows is managing it - but when I unistall MSI software it causes more
problems. Can you recommend something - it doesn't have to be fancy it just
needs to work and allow my laptop to connect to the internet and pull files
off my pc from timt to time?

I have no recommendation, other than to buy from reputable
manufacturers, avoid no-name products, and avoid the cheapest
products.
