wireless network problem

I have a wireless router and it is wired to my pc and another laptop
accesses it wirelessly. we now have another laptop which is wireless
compatible. When i search for available networks, our network appears
but when i attempt to connect to it, it just says acquiring network
address. It stays like this for some time. The laptop has successfully
connected to another network before, so i have no idea what the problem
is. Any ideas? Thanks

On the new laptop, are you specifying the right encryption options for
connecting to your wireless router?

Can the new laptop connect to the router successfully using a wired
connection?

How many IP Adresses are you trying to use and how many does does Internet
Service Provider allow you?

I don't think there could be a problem with that, Ak. Alfred is using
a wireless router, so he only uses one IP address from his ISP. The
wireless router allocates private IP addresses to the computers.

The router implements something like Internet connection sharing right?

I just got a wireless router and I have the same problem. I have a cable
modem connected to the WAN port of the wireless router and two computers
connected to the LAN ports. The router gets its IP address from the ISP and
the router assigns my computers 192.168.0.114 and 192.168.0.114. Everything
works fine with the Internet connection and file sharing for both computers.
When a friend comes over with her laptop, the laptop finds the signal and
after entering the password it tries to aquire a network address. How long
should one wait before clicking on cancel?

The next time she is over I will connect it to a LAN port, I assume that
will work but what does that tell me - that the wireless connection settings
are not correct? Ditto for what it means if it cannot connect.

Yes, the router and Internet Connection Sharing do basically the same
thing.

If it has the right wireless network settings, your friend's laptop
should get a wireless connection to the router in a minute or so. If
it has trouble connecting with a password (WEP key or WPA key),
temporarily disable encryption on the router and see whether the
computer can connect.
