Lame Norton Antivirus autoupdating

I have Norton Antivirus 2003 set to run Liveupdate. You would think that
Symantec would configure Liveupdate to automatically run at system startup
(since they haven't provided a feature to configure when it runs). I have a
DSL connection. I just seems like it should be a common sense feature of
any anti-virus software that it should check for updated virus definitions
at system startup. To avoid downloading e-mails with viruses, I end up
manually running Liveupdate at startup every day, prior to checking my e-
mail. This is a major annoyance. What anti-virus packages will accurately
always run a virus definition update search at startup? I would love an
anti-virus that would disallow e-mail clients from connecting to mail
servers until the virus check/download had completed.

Thanks.

Some of us don't restart our computers every day. This one of mine has
been on since the last neighborhood power failure, and rebooted once
due to a Windows update. Personally, I would not want that kind of
update to delay getting to my desktop.

Try Avast!. It looks for updates every four hours. And ... the
updates are small, usually around 4 to 10 KB. And it's free.

Here's what I do - 98SE / NAV2000 ( I know, but it has always worked for
me )

1. Don't use the scheduled Live Update within Norton

2 . Use Task Scheduler in Windows.

3. Add Scheduled Task > Next > Browse

4. enter in "file name": ( may vary in your system - look for the
navlu32.exe file)

C:\PROGRAM FILES\NORTON ANTIVIRUS\NAVLU32.EXE ( doesn't have to be all
caps. )

5. open > enter a name ( LIVE UPDATE )

6. check "when my computer starts" > NEXT > FINISH

You're done.

NAV usually updates weekly - you can manually update daily at:

http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/download.html

and select your version - for WIN98 it's:

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/download/pages/US-N95.html

Thanks.

I have automatic LU checked in the options and have found that to be
adequate.

Have you tried putting a shortcut to
C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate\LUAll.exe in your startup folder?
Then, use msconfig and uncheck the startup item associated with the email
program. You will have to click the email icon to start the client. This
should accomplish your goal.

As another poster pointed out, you can also use the command line:

C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate\LUAll.exe

which will update ALL Symantec products on your system ( Mine just does the
Virus Defs. )

For my alternative, I forgot to add:

After you finish, double click on the named task in scheduled tasks, and,
in the "run" line, after the closing quote, type a space and /scheduled
, then OK. Should look like this:

"C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\NAVLU32.EXE" /scheduled

In the LUall.exe alternative, type a space and -s , then OK. Should
look like this:

"C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate\LUAll.exe" -s

This will cause either option to run in the background with no interaction
from you.
