Label Printers

We are connecting existing label printers to our point of sale system. They have worked well on Windows 98 but under XP the system will print several labels and then it pauses for 30 seconds and prints the rest

We have tested this on several computers with two brands of printers - one Eltron and two Cognitive. We connect directly to LPT1. We have tried it with no printer driver, Generic Text driver and the mfgs. drivers all with the same results.

What is strange is that I have tried the above on four systems. The one system - Windows 98 has no problem. My note book (XPpro) has the problem. My client has two identical three station networks (XP) and one has no problem while the other has the problem

I think we can discount the printer as being the source of the problem. It has to be a setting in XP. But with no printer driver, where can you make settings in XP

Suggestions are much appreciated

Have you tried enabling "Print Directly to the Printer" under the Advanced
tab of
the printer properties ??

That is the solution. Many thanks. The fact that one system worked (no printers set up) was what confused us. The other identical system did not work. Can you explain why this might be?

Again, thank you

Yes! That is the solution. Can you explain why one system (no printers installed) worked and the other identical system had the problem

Bauer,

I wish I could explain it, but I can't. I can say that the reason that I
suggested it
was that it seemed like a "spooling" issue to me.

Sorry, I wish I had the answer for you.

Label printers sometimes do not like the extra control characters that
Windows print spooler may place in the printer queue data stream. I know
that several commercial business label printers require a straight ASCII
character stream, which print directly to the printer provides.
