Kl1 Service Failed to Start - Missing File

WXP SP2, HP Printer, Zone Alarm Pro,
Newly Formatted but still getting this message in Event Viewer\System.

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7000
Date: 08/02/2007
Time: 11:37:20 PM
User: N/A
Computer: deleted by me
Description:
The kl1 service failed to start due to the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

My Note: This is a K , a small L and a One
This error was seen prior to installing any Programs and Printer so there's
a good chance it's a Windows file.
I thought this might be Keyboard related just because it starts with a "K"
but my Keyboard Saitek Eclipse 11 didn't come with an accompanying CD as WXP
files they say are sufficient.

Seems like this is a Sevice but I can't relate it to any of the Services
listed.

I just found it mentioned ...
in System Info under Software Environment\System Drivers.
C\Windows\System32\Drivers\Kl1.sys Kernel Driver, Started: No, Start Mode:
Boot.

Does anyone know what software this Kl1.sys file is from or how can I
find out?
If this is a System file, does that mean it's a Windows file and therefore,
it will be on the WXP CD? I have no idea how to retrieve it - can I get it on
the Net?

Any suggestions will be most appreciated. Thx ...

Hi Edna,
This a Service for Kerspersky Anti-Hacker Software, did you have or you
still have Kaspersky Anti-Virus Suite installed?.
It does Exist in these paths:
C:\Program Files\
C:\Windows\System32\drivers
C:\Windows\System32\
Also in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\kavsvc\
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet01\Services\kavsvc\

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet02\Services\kavsvc\
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\kavsvc\Enum

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet03\Services\kavsvc\
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet03\Services\kavsvc\Enum

So if you did uninstall the Software, you may have a leftover traces and
still active or thought by the system still install as it can read it's path
or file.
HTH.
Let us know.

Hi Nass, Thx but ... I've NEVER had such installed and too, I just
formatted my HD so it HAS to be something else besides having installed
Kersersky Anti-Virus

OK Let's think. Is some of this Kersersky?? Software in WXP perhaps
licensed by MS to use in WXP? Likely - don't u agree it's possible? At
least now I know the name and cause of the file being here or rather, not
being here. LOL

OK then, what do I do about it? I'd like to get the little critter and
plunk it in the folders u say it's supposed to be located so I won't see
these errors.

Do YOU have the file and if so, have u ever installed Kersperky Anti Virus?
Strange I should get these messages as my friend doesn't and too she can't
find the file on her system.
I have no idea what to do now other than try to ignore the Error messages.

Is there a way to stop the Registry from trying to run it at boot - without
messing something up. ...

Hi Edna,
I will do this:
Rename all found files/folder to say:
Kl1old.sys and safe it, then Reboot and see if the error message will go and
none of the applications will shout ouch and complain from missing
file/folder.
Also try to look in the Start Up and uncheck the starting line for it.
To do that msconfig click [OK] and click Start Up Tab.
P.S what version of ZA you have and is it the free one?.

HTH.
Let us know.

Hi edna,
Just to be sure not something else, try to check the Time on your computer
and it is been set to right, then download this ShellExView and see the
running application in the background:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/slowrightclick.htm
If you have been connected to the net scan for malwares and Viruses.
HTH.

Hi Nass, Working with what u told me I followed up on the Zone Alarm Board
and there's others besides me having the same problem. I haven't got to a
solution yet, if they found one or not, as I was reading when u popped in
with further suggestions. They think it's the new version 7 but I'm here to
tell u LOL, it was present in the previous PAID version too and obviously
ZA's done nothing about it.
Now that I know what the cause is, I can relate back to this error occurring
in October when I first installed ZA. I've been meaning to post this query
since then and finally tonight I got to doing so. I'm glad I kept postponing
it as others are now noticing the error too.
You did a great job Nass alerting me to an anti virus program. I wouild
never have located the problem without ya! I've got other problems I'll
post in the coming weeks so watch for me and see what u come up with! LOL
Thx EVER so much.

Nass a post by ZA dtd 17Jan07 say they are aware of this problem and too the

Following your suggestion, I chose instead to merely disable ZA at Startup

Yes Edna, but you need a Firewall to protect you from intruders and block
unwanted traffics.
Try to uninstall ZA and Reinstall it again but before installing it clear
the traces for the old installation and reinstall and see if that will help.
If not I heard Comodo is a good Firewall, also Keiro good one too.

it will be on the WXP CD? I have no idea how to retrieve it - can I get it on

Any suggestions will be most appreciated. Thx ...

Hi Edna,
This a Service for Kerspersky Anti-Hacker Software, did you have or you
still have Kaspersky Anti-Virus Suite installed?.
It does Exist in these paths:
C:\Program Files\
C:\Windows\System32\drivers
C:\Windows\System32\
Also in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\kavsvc\
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet01\Services\kavsvc\

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet02\Services\kavsvc\
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\kavsvc\Enum

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet03\Services\kavsvc\
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet03\Services\kavsvc\Enum

So if you did uninstall the Software, you may have a leftover traces and
still active or thought by the system still install as it can read it's path
or file.

Nass, Sorry I didn't explain myself clearly. I Disable ZA prior to shutting
down then Enable it when I've returned to Windows. I'd NEVER sit here
without a Firewall.
I somehow inherited Spyware or whatever and ended up reluctantly having to
format because of the beasts.

As u are aware, no one Program protects u from all of them and no one
Scanner exposes all of them. It's unfortunate these skillful Creators

Well I did read that Old version prior to ZA ver 7 was stable and read also
that the newer version have some instability, but very limited number of
users reported that.
If you can get hold of an older version for ZA alarm before 7 but not later
than 6 and see if it will produce the same error or not.
Here is the kink for ZA download all versions:
http://download.zonelabs.com/bin/free/information/znalm/zaReleaseHistory.html
Again I will run check desk and Defrag in safe Mode (but Do a clean Disk
before Defrag).

C\Windows\System32\Drivers\Kl1.sys Kernel Driver, Started: No, Start Mode:
Boot.

Does anyone know what software this Kl1.sys file is from or how can I
find out?
If this is a System file, does that mean it's a Windows file and therefore,
it will be on the WXP CD? I have no idea how to retrieve it - can I get it on
the Net?

Any suggestions will be most appreciated. Thx ...

Hi Edna,
This a Service for Kerspersky Anti-Hacker Software, did you have or you
still have Kaspersky Anti-Virus Suite installed?.
It does Exist in these paths:
C:\Program Files\
C:\Windows\System32\drivers
C:\Windows\System32\
Also in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\kavsvc\
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet01\Services\kavsvc\

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet02\Services\kavsvc\
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\kavsvc\Enum

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet03\Services\kavsvc\
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet03\Services\kavsvc\Enum

So if you did uninstall the Software, you may have a leftover traces and
still active or thought by the system still install as it can read it's path
or file.
HTH.
Let us know.
Regards,
nass
