Keyboard keys not producing the correct symbol

I have a problem in which my £ sign on my family's work spaces (the uother
users on XP) appears as the # key (by pressing £, # appears instead).
Also the same problem occurs when they press the @ key, instead they get the
" sign (by pressing @, " appears instead).
Can anybody help me with this! It is very annoying!

Your keyboard is set to american english instead of UK.

Control Panel, Regional Settings.
