keyboard and mouse stop responding while surfing

i'm experiencing some very odd behaviour with my computer lately, that
i have no idea how to troubleshoot.
at what seems to be random moments (approx. once a day), while surfing
the internet, suddenly i lose all controls of my keyboard and mouse as
if they got suddenly unplugged.
display is completely fine and i can see the mouse pointer, but any
keyboard and mouse action does nothing at all ( thus CTR+ALT+DELETE is
useless).
pressing "Num Lock" key doesn't switch the LED on/off.
OTOH, i'm using a KVM switch in conjunction with another computer and
that seems fine, i'm able to switch from the problematic computer to
the another using the "double-CTRL+1 -2" keyboard command.

i'm using XP pro SP2 with all the latest updates including those for
anti-virus and anti-spyware.
AFAIK, i didn't install any program or did anything specific to the OS
just before that started happening.
even though most of the time i am able to recognise the symptoms and
causes of Windows problems, this one has me stumped.
any pointers...

many thanks.

what interface are your mouse and keyboard? USB 2.0? PS2?

If USB go into device manager and uninstall all Universal Serial Bus
controllers then reboot and windows will reinstall them.

hi, thanks needlove.

my mouse is basic MS optical with a USB plug into a PS/2 adapter into
the KVM switch along with the keyboard too.
so there's no USB drivers involved here.
and why would it suddenly stop responding after say a few hours of
surfing?
everything is plugged in firmly, i haven't touched it for ages.

so weird, i have never heard of this problem before...

it is still happening, at random, really no idea about what is causing
it.
when rebooting, there isn't a single clue in the Event Viewer at the
time it happened.

anything i should try?
many thanks,
Fabrice
