Keeping Defender ON

G

Guest

When I open my PC each day, Defender is turned OFF. I've been into the
Tools, etc, and follow the instructions to turn it ON, but each day I find
it's OFF when I open my PC. This is not the Beta 2 version, it's new since I
just downloaded it yesterday.

Since I don't think I'll find my way back to this site, please respond to

I've done all that's called for in that article: change and repair, and
still it turns itself OFF. Any other ideas? I'm using Spybot, if that has
anything to do with it.
I'm no longer using Norton, and in a trial version of Live Care One. More
help is appreciated.

Thanks, and here's a suggestion: Somewhere in the downloading instructions
of either Defender or One Care, there ought to be a note about how One Care
reacts on Defender. It would have saved me many hours of aggravation trying
to figure out why, when I'm following the instructions, it fails to perform
as Microsoft says it should.

You're quite welcome... and yes, I agree there are a number of deficiencies
in the documentation of Microsoft Security related products in general.
Since OneCare at 1.5 is a fairly new release with it's own unique set of
problems, we can only hope things improve over time. Previous releases of
that product allowed, and in-fact wanted, the standalone Windows Defender
to be installed alongside it. About all I can recommend is that you follow
these newsgroups while you're in WLOC trial.

Hi Dave!

Was having the same problem as infla23. I read the article that you posted,
and I would like to make sure that I understand it.

FYI........ XP, IE7, WLOC 1.5, and windef. So..... I can and should turn
off windef. I can remove the desktop shortcut for windef, but should not
uninstall windef. Just leave it on my computer.....??? Is this correct?

Thanks a lot!

Hi V.I.;

'Bout all I know is what I see in here and in the WLOC newsgroups, since I
no longer have WLOC installed. But, if your trialing WLOC I think it pays
NOT to uninstall the disabled Defender, since you may want it back after
the trial runs out if you don't purchase. If you've bought the WLOC
product, it's redundant and disabled, with a noticeable exception... the
tools/software explorers are not incorporated in the WLOC version, and you
could re-access them by manually starting Defender, but you probably
wouldn't want to run the standalone Defender all the time that WLOC is
providing RTP. You could instead use System Internals Process Explorer to
provide much the same or more functionality:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/ProcessExplorer.mspx

Philip Taron [msft] says with 1.5 WLOC you can and "should" remove WD...
but more practically perhaps, Steven Boots, MVP says,

"If you are running XP, you do not need to uninstall Defender as it
will be enabled should you choose to uninstall Windows Live OneCare.
Also, the additional tools that Defender includes are not available in
the OneCare interface, so it does not hurt to manually start Defender
if you want to use the utilities. Shut Defender down when you're done,
but OneCare will disable Defender on next start anyway."
