I did a windows update which indicated that kb911565 was a critical update.
However when I tried to install it manually the following error message
appeared "windows media player 9 must be installed first". But I have already
upgraded to windows media player 10. What am I to make of this? 1. do I
uninstall wmp10 and install wmp9 just to get this upgrade? 2.Does wmp10
include the upgrade and the "critical upgrade " message is therefore given in
error?

It appears Microsoft has a patch for each version of WMP.

If you have WMP 10, the update is not needed.

No;you won't uninstall WMP10.

Try:-
Start>Run>c:\windows\inf\unregmp2.exe /UpdateWMP>ok
